Overview of the SEO Process
The process of securing a high ranking on search engines is called “search engine optimisation” or SEO for short.
It involves on page optimisation, which means fine tuning your website for success. And it involves off page strategies, such as organising links to your site from other reputable sites.
There is no magic wand in achieving the number one ranking on search engines such as Google. Many factors are involved.
These factors change as the search engines evolve and change the way they rate websites. That means you can’t “set and forget”.
For example, our company has achieved number one for our main search term. Holding on to it is difficult. We typically hold number one, two or three position on page one. (Once when we were swamped with client work and neglected our own site, we even slipped to sixth position on page one!)
A Word of Warning
There are many unscrupulous companies in the SEO sector. If you are asked to “pay per link”, there’s a very good chance you are being set up with a love-you-and-leave-you sting, where you will get many links to your site – but in the eyes of the search engine they will be inconsequential at best and toxic at worst. (Eg. A fish shop in London linking to a caryard in Adelaide has no relevance and the search engines can easily determine this.)
Other companies use “black hat” strategies. Essentially they use a variety of means to try to trick the search engine into believing a site is more important than it really is. Do not be tempted with these sorts of methods, which include cloaking, links to spam sites, keyword stuffing, bait and switch campaigns. Not only is it a short term solution, you may be penalised by the search engine – with your site not even indexed and therefore invisible.
Optimisation Basics
Here is a shortlist of the things your site should be doing to rank highly.
1. Quantity and quality of external links, as well as the anchor text used.
2. On page keyword usage
3. Work to ensure that your site is a trustworthy source
4. Unique content
Obviously this is not a conclusive list. There are hundreds of actions you can take to lift your ranking. However, few companies have the time and resources.
We believe the best approach is to use the 80/20 rule. That is, 80% of your success will come from choosing the top 20% of optimisation tactics.
