Everyone makes mistakes and hopefully learns from them but it’s a different story when you have a reputation to protect - like these guys at Yahoo.
Recently, they decided to free up accounts that have been inactive for 12 months or more. This means that emails, contacts and all associated info will be trashed in a black hole. Yahoo will open up those account IDs for new users. Brilliant!
That’s right... I can now use your Mum’s old Yahoo email address.
Let’s say she signed up for Groupon with her Yahoo account and forgot about it. Let’s then assume she accidentally saved her credit card info into her Groupon account. With a little password reset magic, the person who now has the Yahoo account she never logged in to, can order anything they want off Groupon with her credit card.
We all love our Mums, don’t we? And we don’t want this to happen! Yahoo, what were you thinking? The whole online community is furious.
On a lighter note: No worries – here at Boylen, rest assured this would never happen to you and your business. We’ll make sure an end-to-end “secure” digital strategy is in place. Tried and tested since 1993 - your mum would love it too!
