What does graphic design cost in Adelaide?

Whay is it that most creative agencies don’t put their graphic design pricing on their website?

Hopefully we can save you a day of phone calls, trying to make sense of graphic design pricing in Adelaide. The following compares the fees/rates/costs/prices of Adelaide graphic design agencies.

  • $25/hr. Given that the Australian national minimum wage is $24.10 per hour, your project is being farmed out to a developing nation or third-world country.
  • $60 for low/no experience, one-person show. Great price but it’s a graphic designer learning on the job. No liability insurance. High rate of rework is frustrating. But if you know a graduate who you trust and want to help, go for it (just don’t expect it to be perfect).
  • $150 to $200 for well-resourced agencies with experienced designers, strong processes etc. This is where you will find companies like Boylen, Black Squid and Flux, and they generally rank highest on Google. Award-winning. Impressive client list reflects the quality of their work.
  • $300-$750 an hour for national and international companies that have high overheads. Likely to be a big ad agency. Sometimes they actually have fewer designers in Adelaide because they have high staff levels in Sydney, Melbourne and New York. Like the previous tier, excellent quality and processes.
  • $1,000-$2,500 an hour for companies that design logos that will set you back millions of dollars.Landor Associates were paid $100m to design the new Accenture logo.)

Remember to add gst to the figures above if it is an Australian designer.

What does your graphic design fee include?

Boylen’s hourly fee provides great value.

Firstly, you get exceptionally talented designers working on your project. The graphic designers in our design studio – Maddie, PJ and Henry – all have at least 20 years of experience each.

Our graphic design/website design project managers have excellent credentials to guide the graphic design process. Sasha is a university-qualified project manager who know how to keep a creative project on track, without constraining the ‘magic’ of the creative process. The same is true of Mandy, who ‘shot the lights out’ working for a top Sydney design agency before returning home to Adelaide.

Not only are Maddie, PJ and Henry brilliantly creative, they work quickly to meet tight deadlines on a daily basis.  Whether it’s a new logo design or a major creative campaign, they will meet your deadlines!

We’ve benchmarked pricing across the graphic design sector and the results are in the next section.

If you need a quote or want to talk with one of our designers (Graphic design, branding specialist or web designer) we’re only a phone call away (08) 8233 9433.

How many design revisions are included?

This is very common question that our graphic designers are asked, so let’s answer it from the start.

The more research that is undertaken during the information-gathering phase of a project, the more likely it is that our initial series of design concepts will “hit the mark”.

Our graphic designers normally allow for extensive consultation. They’ll ask you lots of questions. Often in a creative design project, there will be ongoing discussions with you about preferences as they surface, which will allow our talented Adelaide designers to “test” their thinking with you.  It’s by communicating with you that we achieve your “visual communication – and often it’s a word or phrase from one of your team that sparks our design creativity.

We use this process because it narrows down the options. It also highlights likes and dislikes from your key stakeholders – and allows Boylen to offer ongoing ideas to gauge their appropriateness. As a result, we find that our designers do in fact “hit the mark” very quickly, with the process then moving to revisions to fine-tune the chosen design.

If it doesn’t satisfy your needs, we will go back to the original brief and work with you to identify what is out of sync. From there it may be a series of modifications. Of course, if your CEO has just joined the process and wants to start again, we’ll have to recreate the job – but that rarely happens.

If you need a quote or want to talk with one of our designers, please make contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

how much do GRAPHIC DESIGNERs charge in adelaide, south australia?

Hourly rates vary from $25 an hour for offshore ‘sweatshops’, to $600-plus an hour. The average agency fee per hour is $150 to $240.

Boylen charges $160/hr for its graphic design work.

This fee positions us in the mid tier for a long-established graphic design studio that has multiple designers and has won numerous awards. We’re an independent agency, so we don’t have the overheads of national and international design businesses.

By contrast:

  • a young graduate starting out and with no real experience except their homework portfolio will be desperate for any work they can get, so we’ve seen then charge a little as $60 an hour
  • high-end firms or those that hype their marketing, will charge you over $300/hr.

should i pay my graphic designer by the hour or a project fee?

A project fee gives you certainty and that’s why most companies go for this option.

But if you are worried about paying too much, then choose the hourly rate and get an indication of the price/cost range.

WHY DO I NEED A GRAPHIC DESIGNER?

A talented graphic designer can transform your brand! And if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you know that, deep down, your business needs the professional touch of a graphic designer.

A graphic design company not only works to achieve the “wow factor for you, they also take care of the essentials, such as balance, the power of colours, typography and layout. You might have a team member who is a whizz with Adobe Photoshop but is it fair to ask them to provide a professional service on matters such as Pantone matching, how to manipulate kerning, tracking, and leading, and how to use principle of proximity in difference ways during the userexperience?

There’s a good chance that the larger your organisation, the more variations of your branding there are across graphic design and web design (digital) assets. Bringing in a qualified designer from the outside your organisation is a tried and tested way of introducing much-need consistency.

As we have done for many organisations, your graphic designer can act as your brand custodian, while also being a resource for staff when they are making decisions that have graphic design elements. It might be as simple as where to place a logo on a powerpoint presentation. For medical and financial organisations that are regulated by the Australian Government, decisions on use of third-party logos and what content you can include become a lot more exacting.

If you have a specialist graphic designer, they can work with a web designer to create harmony across multiple formats, which has the impact of lifting both projects (website design, graphic design). We have both under the same roof, which helps speed up the process.
